Desperate measures
Hot on the heels of the antitrust hearings in Europe comes another potential troublemaker for Microsoft. This time the affected party is none other than Google itself, and the bone of contention seems to be the same piece of software that started the antitrust hearings, namely the default browser – Internet Explorer.
Google, the fast-rising Internet star, is raising objections to the way that it says Microsoft, the incumbent powerhouse of computing, is wielding control over Internet searching in its new Web browser.
This tiny piece of screen real estate that people type their search queries into has been hogged by Microsoft’s own search engine in the latest iteration of the browser that is IE 7. Google seems to be really miffed and has in fact taken things a step ahead and has informed the Justice department and The European Union about Microsoft’s latest underhand tactics.
To be honest I personally dont think this is going to make any serious dent in Google’s search lead. Of note is the fact that the default search engine in Safari is Google and it cannot be easily changed by the user.Wonder whether MS will kick up a fuss about that.
